From the dusty pages of the Puranas comes the fascinating tale of ILA. At different points in time, Ila lives either as woman or man. This musical retelling of the legend explores the wonder and the absurdity of it all: the story, the character, and our own (somewhat limited?) notions of gender.
Oral traditions from the world over have often used music as an integral device of storytelling. With this as inspiration, our tale is almost entirely performed in song. In the process, this performance has evolved into an excitingly complex musical exploration of gender fluidity and queerness.
Ultimately, seen through the lens of gender or against the larger cultural framework of Hindu tradition, the performance seeks to celebrate the spirit of doubt, of wonder and of inclusiveness in ways that are whimsical, quirky, & unsettling.
